Civil Service Requirements

CITIZENSHIP:
Must be a citizen of the United States.

AGE:
Application must be filed between the ages of 18 and 40.

EDUCATION:
High School diploma or GED equivalent.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must comply with West Virginia State code.

The following performance levels are required to pass the Physical Ability Test (PAT).

  1. Sit-Ups: Twenty-eight (28) bent leg sit-ups completed in one (1) minute.
  2. Push-Ups: Eighteen (18) conventional straight leg push-ups in one (1) minute.
  3. One and one-half (1.5) mile run: Fourteen minutes and thirty six seconds (14:36) as the elapsed time to complete the run.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Must successfully complete the examination process.

Testing Process

AGILITY TEST:
General physical agility testing to determine strength and mobility.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION:
Validated examination administered by the Huntington Police Civil Service Commission.

BACKGROUND EXAMINATIONS:
Thorough review of work record, academic achievements, criminal record, references, etc.

POLYGRAPH EXAMINATION:
Review of the applicant's background and involvement in criminal activity.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION:
Thorough physical examination by a physician.

PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING:
Battery of psychological examinations.

ORAL INTERVIEW:
Personal interview with board of officers and community representatives.
